Kedarnath Temple: The Abode of Lord Shiva
Located at an altitude of 3,553 meters, Kedarnath Temple is one of the most revered Hindu shrines, attracting over lakhs of pilgrims annually.
Name and Significance:
The name "Kedarnath" originates from Sanskrit words "Kedara" (field) and "Natha" (lord), meaning "the lord of the field." According to the Kashi Kedara Mahatmya, it is called so because "the crop of liberation" grows here.
Legends and History:
Hindu legends state that the temple was initially built by the Pandavas and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest Hindu shrines of Shiva. The temple is said to be the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas.
Best Time to Visit:
Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open to the general public only between:
- April (Akshaya Tritiya)
- November (Kartik Purnima, the autumn full moon)
